International Marriage Divorce

international marriage divorce
In an international marriage, what assets is a spouse entitled to – in the marriage and after divorce?

A man and a woman are both US citizens. The man leaves and moves to Brazil. He becomes a Brazilian citizen. The woman goes to Brazil and gets married to him there – no marriage license is filed in the US. They have an existing joint bank account in the US. He has property and accounts in Brazil, and she has property and accounts in the US. What becomes joint marital property and what legally stays separate? And what if they decide to get divorced – are they entitled to any of the property or assets that is in the other person’s name (such as money in bank accounts, home, retirement fund?)

Something to ask a lawyer about. The agreements between countries are not always very clear. The court where the divorce is filed typically determines what is marital property.
