When will the court will refuse name change?
My friend is trying to change her last name in the US. It’s not a divorce/marriage issue, more of a personal preference. Just wondering; on what occasions does the court refuse to allow a name change?
Unless the court has reason to believe they are attempting to hide from creditors or criminal penalties, it is VERY unusual for a name change to be denied in the US. If the new name was that of a famous person, or considered obscene, there may be problems.
David: This question was posted on the US website. In the US, ‘I don’t like my name’ is actually the reason for the VAST majority of name changes. It actually beats out BOTH marriage and divorce.
