Should Disney be in the Broadway Musical business?
Disney has produced several Broadway productions (Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King, Mary Poppins, etc).
Would you spend the money to see a familiar Disney story on the great white way, or would you be more inclined to spend the money to see a different production not affiliated with the Disney company or its familiar stories?
Disney Theatricals (the branch of Disney that produces on Broadway) doesn’t just produce adaptations of their films – Aida was a Disney Theatricals show. Like any producer on Broadway Disney is hit or miss – its hard to get a show just right so it works as a Broadway musical. They’ve done some lovely productions (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, Aida) and have had two outright duds (Tarzan, The Little Mermaid)
