What are the basic tools needed for an amateur costume designer?
I’m helping with costumes for Beauty and the Beast this year. I know (and have) the qualities needed. I just need basic materials.
Well…as a custom clothier for the past 30 years, I’d say you need at least one basic sewing machine. A straight stitch and an overlock would be better, though, at the very least. In no particular order, you’ll need cutting tables, scissors, pins, measuring tapes/rulers, thread, needles (machine and hand), patterns (unless you can draft your own), fabric, trim, marking tools, closures (zippers/gormmets/buttons/hooks/etc) and any setting devices for same, interfacing, elastic, buckram, felting, seam binding, embellishments…I’m sure there’s a lot more that I’ve left out, but that’s just off the top of my head.
